A visit to Fairbourne

At the start of a day out to the Cambrian Coast, Class 158 No. 158835 arrives at Dovey Junction with the service that will take me north to Fairbourne.

I walked up from Fairbourne to the Blue Lake, a long since abandoned slate quarry in the hills above the village. This entrance tunnel, which clearly once had its own narrow gauge railway, has now sadly been filled in by the landowner.

The slate landscape of North Wales is eerie and strange to someone who has encountered it before, and must be surprising to someone who hasn’t. Slate waste has been left all over North Wales, in some places as far as the eye can see.
