This long route around Wastwater takes in the two peaks on the eastern edge of the lake, Whin Rigg and Illgill Head, as well a providing fantastic views of all the nearby peaks.

Here’s a view of YHA Wasdale Hall, right on the edge of the lake.

Though sunny, it was quite breezy higher up, so I was glad of the small shelter cairn on Illgill head. This is a great place to observe the surrounding peaks.

On the descent from Illgill Head to the lake, nearby Kirk Fell comes fully into view.

Finally, after walking back the YHA Wasdale Hall along the relatively flat route on the west side of the lake, another small trip was made to view the last light of the day from the lake side.
