Great Western Railway and Chiltern Class 165 multiple units

Class 165 multiple units are a common sight across the Great Western Railway and Chiltern Railways routes. Although they were built for commuter services near the capital, as those lines have been electrified, the 165s have been reassigned to routes connecting Malvern and Worcester to the South West.

This first photograph is of a Chiltern Railways Class 165 at Leam Road, near Leamington Spa station.

Another Chiltern Railways Class 165 is pictured at the top of Hatton bank.

165110 is spotted at Pershore station. The recent history of these ‘turbo’ units on the Cotswold line has been varied. In this case, 165110 is operating a limited service between Worcester and Moreton-in-Marsh, south of which the line was closed.

Another Chiltern Class 165 is pictured at Dark Lane, partway down the Hatton bank. The downward grade of the track really is obvious from this viewpoint.

The curved lines of young crops in this field make for an intersting view of 165129, operating a service from Worcester to the South West. The gaps in the lineside vegetation also make this view ideal for a short train.

Two images of 165132 taken on the same day on the outskirts of Cheltenham. The unit is first pictured on the approach to Cheltenham, where it will reverse. I am very pleased with the lighting in this photograph; it’s one where the shadows have fallen in such a way that they surround the train.

Having reversed via the reversing siding north of Cheltenham Spa station, 165132 proceeds south on its next journey to the South West.
