Ambleside

YHA Ambleside is located in Waterhead, a ten minute walk from Ambleside itself. Despite the impression from the map of this being a rural, remote location, YHA Ambleside is one of the easiest YHAs to reach by public transport, from most areas of the country.

The majority of Avanti West Coast Main Line services stop at Oxenholme Lake District. Oxenholme is also served by Transpennine Express from Manchester Airport. A frequent service, connecting with Avanti services, runs along the branch line to Windermere, with some branch services extending south as far as Lancaster, enabling more onward connections. To reach YHA Ambleside, take the branch to the end of the line at Windermere, and take a connecting bus service towards Keswick, as far as The Waterhead Inn, which is adjacent to the YHA and two stops before Ambleside itself. Most of the buses on this route have stop announcements, making it easy to get off at the correct stop.

Here is one of the Transpennine Express services from Manchester Airport, which will continue on from Preston (shown here) to call at Oxenholme Lake District.

And here is YHA Ambleside, photographed in the evening, after a long day’s journey.
