(Slightly) dramatic views from Whinlatter
This was my last morning at Lanefoot Farm campsite, so I took my last opportunity to photograph the hens and chicks which roam around the campsite.
Here’s one more view of Lanefoot Farm, clouds hugging the top of Skirrid behind. Today’s weather was the worst of the whole trip, with bits of dramatic cloud and a strong breeze, but still no rain; I was extremely lucky with the whole week!
Then, I set off from the campsite along the Whinlatter Pass. It’s just a short drive to a layby from which Whinlatter summit can be reached by the forest path. Following this path up from the road, it is essential to stick to the main footpath and not take the side paths. The side paths are for mountain bikers, who ride downhill quite rapidly and wouldn’t want to meet any obstruction!
At the end of the wide forest path, a gate leads out onto Whinlatter. Turning right at the gate keeps the forest, separated by a wall, immediately right, and a steep path leads quickly up to a plateau. From here, the route to the summit cairn is obvious.
There are fantastic views of the village of Low Lorton from this spot, which is where I’m heading next, and then on to Crummock Water for a rest and to read a book.
